In the rugged landscape of the Salkantay Trail, a journey began that would transcend the confines of mere exploration. It was here, amidst the peaks and valleys, that Enrique Umbert Sr., founder of Mountain Lodges of Peru, embarked on a quest that would not only redefine his understanding of sustainability, but also leave an indelible mark on the company’s values and business practices.

Enrique Sr.’s vision extended far beyond the construction of lodges; it encompassed building trust and fostering reciprocal relationships with local communities. The connection these people had to the land was palpable, their traditions deeply rooted. Sustainability was not merely a concept, it was a lived experience. So, meticulous attention was devoted to the construction of the lodges, ensuring harmonization with the surroundings and utilizing materials sourced locally. In addition, environmentally responsible practices were prioritized in the operation, such as waste management, energy conservation and reforestation programs. But the commitment to sustainability extended beyond environmental concerns, seeking to ensure that the company’s presence would benefit the communities economically and socially. The enduring partnership with NGO Yanapana Peru facilitates initiatives such as employing local staff and supporting community projects like healthcare and education initiatives, cultural preservation efforts, and agriculture programs.

MLP’s efforts may seem small in the grand scheme of global sustainability challenges, but it’s clear that by nurturing a little corner of the world, a lasting legacy of sustainability can exist for future generations.
